In hopes of reserving key spectrum for use by healthcare institutions for critical applications, a subgroup of AAMI’s Wireless Task Force is pushing for a “safe haven” for interference-sensitive applications in the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. The effort comes in response to an announcement by the Federal Communications Commission that it would make more spectrum in the 5 GHz band available for widespread use. The AAMI proposal would create “interference-free” zones in the spectrum for “life-critical applications.” These uses would be given priority in their bands, while other users would be prohibited from using the same frequencies. According to the group, this prohibition would affect very few people. Read more in the AAMI press release.
