According to the medical device incident reports database, infusion devices have become a top patient safety concern—associated with 52,000 adverse incidents and 712 reported deaths during the last five years—prompting the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) to take action.

To help improve safety, AAMI’s Infusion Device Committee is planning a safety panel of experts from industry, regulatory agencies, clinicians, and clinical technology managers to identify systemic changes that can be made to the devices and other ways to minimize adverse events.

To find solutions, the committee will review data sources such as FDA’s MedSun device network, examine existing and potential standards, and bring industry professionals together for an infusion device summit/technology assessment conference to discuss safety issues.

The committee will meet in June during the 2010 AAMI Annual Conference and Expo. Additional information about the conference is available online.
