Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, debuts Siemens’ new lighting fast SOMATOM Definition Flash dual-source computed tomography (CT) scanner.
The SOMATOM performs ultra-quick scans, often in less than a second. Clinicians can perform a full 2-meter scan in less than five seconds and a scan of the entire heart takes only 250 milliseconds, or about one quarter of a heartbeat.
The system also operates at an extremely reduced radiation dose, minimizing patient exposure to dose-sensitive anatomical regions, such as the female breast, by as much as 40%.
Furthermore, an adaptive dose shield blocks irrelevant pre-spiral and post-spiral radiation, providing an additional 25% reduction of the dose required for routine examinations.
