Medical Products Rating System
ECRI Institute, Plymouth Meeting, Pa, now employs a five-star rating system for evaluating medical products, updating the organization’s previous system, which rated products as preferred, acceptable, and not recommended. The additional rating gradations allow analysts to better convey product advantages and disadvantages, giving a more accurate picture of which devices will be suitable for a particular organization.
In the new scale, analysts rate products primarily on their overall capabilities, portability, and battery life. To date, analysts have tested five ventilators for their use in internal hospital transportation, long-term care, or mass casualty critical care. Complete product evaluations and ratings are provided in ECRI Institute’s monthly journal, Health Devices.
