The next-generation clip sensor is designed for consistent performance across diverse patient skin tones.


Philips has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its next-generation reusable oxygen saturation clip sensor. The device is intended to provide clinicians with reliable measurements for diverse patient populations and clinical conditions.

The updated sensor includes internal optical refinements designed to improve signal quality and measurement consistency. In desaturation studies, the reusable clip sensor achieved an Accuracy Root Mean Square value of 1.6%, which is nearly twice as accurate as the 3% level recommended by the International Organization for Standardization and recognized by the FDA, according to a press release from Philips.

The sensor also demonstrated consistent performance across a broad range of skin tones. Accuracy varied by less than 0.5% between the light and dark skin pigmentation groups evaluated within an arterial oxygen saturation range of 85% to 100%, the company says.

“This FDA clearance reflects our ongoing investment in advancing sensor technology and rigorous validation practices, and we’ll continue applying these innovations across our pulse oximetry portfolio so clinicians can make care decisions with even greater confidence,” says Sachin Chaudhari, category leader, clinical measurements and specialty monitoring at Philips, in a release.

Pulse oximetry is among the most common monitoring technologies in healthcare, providing data to assess oxygenation status. Because signal quality can be influenced by various physiological, clinical, and technical factors, Philips says it uses a testing program designed to support performance in diverse care environments.

The company says its validation practices align with evolving FDA recommendations and international standards, including those established by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission. Philips continues to work with clinicians, researchers, regulators, and standards organizations to support the evolution of validation practices, according to the press release.

The reusable oxygen saturation clip sensor is expected to become available in select markets later this year.
