The Healthcare Technology Safety Institute, part of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), has released the first of a series of free papers that address the biggest technology-related challenges in health care along with solutions to those challenges.

The first paper details procedures in place at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, that reduce hazards and threats stemming from ineffective alarm conditions that might jeopardize patient safety. The paper highlights the hospital’s efforts to establish baseline alarm priority levels and periodically evaluating the effectiveness of those alarms.

?Each subsequent paper will provide recommendations for implementation and process improvements. Future paper topics include infusion pump implementation and infusion pump integration.
