What are some physiological side effects of improper scanning?

There has been no research that demonstrates any physiological side effects from ultrasound exposure or dosage issues. Conversely, to my knowledge there also has not been any research that demonstrates that there can be no side effects. Based on this data—or in some cases the lack of data—it is generally considered a good practice to use ultrasound only when it is prudent.

Ultrasound system power output is managed by a combination of AP&I (acoustic power and intensity) hardware and software that are designed to keep the output well below mandated levels. That said, it still would be prudent to keep patient exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
