InSightec presented its magnetic resonance (MR)-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) solution for the treatment of pain from bone metastases at the recent 56th annual American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in San Francisco.

The company’s MRgFUS device, the ExAblate OR targets ultrasound energy so it affects one specific focal point while sparing surrounding tissue. A wide beam of focused ultrasound intersects the bone cortex producing a broad area of heating, destroying pain-transmitting endocortical nerve endings and providing relief.

One of the advantages to the treatment option is that it requires no stoppage of planned or ongoing chemotherapy, and therefore provides leverage for patient management, according to the company. It also allows for real-time feedback, and patients enjoy immediate pain alleviation.

InSightec notes the ExAblate OR’s high success rates as well as a high safety profile. Detailed information, including case stories, are available on the InSightec site.
