Varian Medical Systems has won a competitive bid to provide advanced radiotherapy technology and its Eclipse treatment planning system to six major hospitals in Shanghai. The company is scheduled to install its Edge radiosurgery suite in five affiliate hospitals of Shanghai Jiao Tong University this year. Varian will also install its Trilogy system within the Longhua Hospital Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, one of the largest traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in China.
The five hospitals affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University are Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai General Hospital and Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital. These hospitals specialize in several oncology practices, including the treatment of lung and breast cancer, as well as pediatric oncology.
The Edge radiosurgery system offers a precise, noninvasive alternative to conventional surgery, allowing clinicians to treat tumors from outside the body using carefully shaped high-energy x-rays. There are no incisions and patients contend with few of the healing, pain, and recovery issues typically associated with conventional surgery.
Further, a treatment couch with six axes of motion enhances treatment options and precision by providing additional angles for targeting tumors. The Edge system can be used to target brain, spine, and lung tumors, as well as tumors in other parts of the body that are typically difficult to treat with traditional surgical methods.
The Trilogy system selected for Longhua Hospital is a fully loaded, turnkey treatment delivery system, with proven high uptime rates. A robust radiotherapy machine, Trilogy is capable of a wide range of treatment modalities.
“We are pleased to collaborate with major hospitals in Shanghai to install our advanced radiation treatment systems,” says Xiao Zhang, MD, managing director of Greater China and vice president of Varian Medical Systems. “Delivering tremendous accuracy and speed, we believe Varian’s radiotherapy technologies could help these hospitals meet the fast-growing demands of cancer patients and physicians who seek strengthened clinical capabilities and hospital efficiency.”
The order for one of the Edge systems and the Trilogy system was booked in the first quarter of the company’s fiscal year 2017. The remaining four Edge systems will be booked in the second quarter of the company’s fiscal year 2017.
