The SignosRT Bladder Scanner from Signostics Ltd has received clearance from the FDA, according to an announcement from the Australia-based manufacturer. The company reports that its handheld ultrasound bladder scanner is used to noninvasively and automatically measure bladder volume in order to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
According to the Signostics announcement, the company created this ultrasound bladder scanner to meet the growing demand for mobile medical devices that can provide care at the bedside. The SignosRT Bladder Scanner weighs less than a pound, so the device can be easily transported for acute care, long-term care, rehabilitation, and general practice cases.
UTIs can increase the length of a hospital stay, according to a 2007 study in the American Journal of Infection Control. Further, catheterizing patients with suspected urinary retention is a big factor in UTIs, according to Signostics. Yet, a study conducted by the University of Udine in Italy found that using an ultrasound bladder scanner can reduce unnecessary catheterizations and the associated risk of UTIs.
Signostics reports that the SignosRT Bladder Scanner device is already commercially available in Australia and New Zealand, and the company plans to launch it in Europe in March 2015. The Royal District Nursing Service in Australia currently uses the scanner for home visits, reporting positive results.
