The spatial computing system brings imaging and procedural data into the surgeon’s field of view, reducing reliance on multiple operating room monitors.
Stryker announced that the first surgical procedure using its SportSuite Vision application on Apple Vision Pro was completed at Duke Health, according to a company press release.
The hip arthroscopy procedure marks the initial clinical use of the software, which received Food and Drug Administration De Novo authorization on July 17 as the first surgical application authorized for intraoperative use with Apple Vision Pro.
“SportSuite Vision marks a new chapter in digital surgery, giving surgeons a more intuitive and ergonomic way to access critical information when and where they need it,” says Matt Moreau, vice president and general manager of Stryker’s sports medicine business, in a release. “By bringing multiple streams of clinical information into a spatial computing environment, we’re transforming how surgeons interact with technology during a complex procedure and moving closer to a truly connected digital operating room.”
Consolidating Operating Room Visuals
During standard arthroscopic procedures, surgeons often rely on multiple separate display monitors positioned across the operating room to review visualization feeds and procedural data, Stryker reports.
SportSuite Vision integrates arthroscopic video, HipCheck, HipMap, and CT imaging into a single customizable spatial computing view. By overlaying digital information into the clinician’s visual space while maintaining visibility of the physical operating room, the technology is designed to reduce dependence on traditional displays and support a more ergonomic workflow.
“Using spatial computing enabled me to customize the placement of key clinical information to fit my workflow and access it within the sterile field,” says Chad Mather III, MD, MBA, an orthopedic surgeon at Duke Health who performed the initial case, in a release. “This helped create a more comfortable, streamlined OR setup while keeping the information I needed in view.”
