The revision to the standard, effective June 1, 2026, specifies that annual electrical safety inspection by a certified electrician or biomedical engineer satisfies the equipment maintenance requirement for in-lab sleep testing programs.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has updated its accreditation standards for sleep labs to specify that annual electrical safety inspections—not testing—must be conducted on patient-related equipment used for in-lab sleep studies.
The revision to Standard L-15, Equipment Maintenance & Procedures, takes effect June 1, 2026. Under the updated language, annual electrical safety inspections must be performed by a certified electrician or biomedical engineer.
According to the AASM, the change reflects current practice related to equipment maintenance and safety oversight in accredited sleep centers. The organization said the update was intended to remove barriers with limited impact on sleep program quality.
No other substantive changes were made to the standards, and the update does not alter accreditation requirements for specialty practice programs.
Updated versions of the 2026 Standards for Accreditation and 2026 Specialty Practice Standards for Accreditation are currently available on the AASM website. The organization encourages accredited programs and applicants to review the revised standards to ensure compliance by the June 1, 2026, effective date.
