The challenge of an emergency often thrusts leadership upon those who do not seek it. That was true at Little Round Top during the battle of Gettysburg, and true in any intensive care unit when the monitoring systems fail. Leadership is a skill any biomed can learn, and every biomed should learn.
Leadership seems to be a popular buzzword today. We have seminars offering leadership training, and centers for leadership study. There are books and videos. There’s even a Leadership for Dummies and a Complete Idiot’s Guide to Leadership. Perhaps it’s a symptom of our time when truly effective leadership seems to be an elusive animal. And perhaps it is because our society demands that everyone be a leader, no matter where you live on the organizational chart.
