The multi-room Hefei Ion Medical Center, which is currently being built in Hefei, Anhui Province in China, will install Varian Medical Systems’ proton therapy system in late 2017, in addition to the vendor’s Aria information management and Eclipse treatment planning software.

Enabling more efficient adaptive proton therapy, Varian’s ProBeam system’s pencil beam scanning enables clinicians to deliver the appropriate dose to a tumor in order to minimize dose to healthy tissue.

“We are happy to collaborate with Varian on a long-term, cooperative relationship to benefit cancer patients in China and make [Hefei Ion Medical Center] an internationally respected proton treatment center,” says Bin Li, director of Heifei Ion Medical Center. Li adds that Varian was selected through a public-tender bidding process involving several international vendors.

“We are very pleased to be selected as the proton therapy solution provider for [Hefei Ion Medical Center],” says Moataz Karmalawy, PhD, general manager of Varian’s particle therapy division. “We will work closely with the clinic to make this advanced cancer-fighting technology accessible to patients across China.”
