The Office of Health Technology and Products will oversee digital modernization, data exchange, and artificial intelligence initiatives across federal health programs.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has established the Office of Health Technology and Products to provide leadership and oversight for healthcare technology modernization. The new organizational component was approved by the secretary of health and human services on June 9, 2026, and became effective the same day.
The office will lead digital product strategy for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. It is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and operation of digital platforms, including systems used by beneficiaries, providers, and states.
Modernizing Healthcare Infrastructure
Key responsibilities include leading modernization for national healthcare infrastructure, such as the National Provider Directory, the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System, and the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System. The office will also direct the replatforming of claims and payment systems to improve scalability and security in coordination with the chief information officer.
Within the new office, the Standards & Interoperability Group will lead enterprise strategy for secure health data exchange. This group focuses on advancing application programming interface-based interoperability and updating administrative transaction standards to reduce burden on providers and payers.
Artificial Intelligence and Open Source Initiatives
The office will also manage the enterprise strategy for artificial intelligence across digital products and platforms. An Open Source Program Group has been created to advance the reuse of software code and collaborative development practices across the Department of Health and Human Services.
The Office of Health Technology and Products will coordinate with the chief information officer to ensure information technology governance, cybersecurity, and capital planning requirements are met. The office also oversees digital service capabilities to provide rapid delivery and support for priority initiatives.
