The new Powerseal Open Extended Jaw device is the fourth addition to the company’s advanced bipolar surgical energy portfolio.

Olympus Corp announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Powerseal Open Extended Jaw Sealer/Divider, a device intended for use in open surgery.

The device is the latest addition to the Olympus Powerseal portfolio of advanced bipolar surgical energy products, joining three existing 5 mm devices. According to the company, the Powerseal portfolio is indicated for use across numerous surgical specialties, including general surgery, gynecological, colorectal, bariatric, urological, thoracic, and vascular procedures.

Device Features and Clinical Applications

According to a company release, the Powerseal Open Extended Jaw is designed for confident sealing of vessels up to and including 7 mm in diameter, tissue bundles, and lymphatics. The device also features multifunctional jaw capabilities to support spot coagulation, cold cutting, atraumatic grasping, and dissecting, along with improved ergonomics to reduce hand fatigue for surgeons.

Unique features for open surgery include a proximally located rotation knob for single-handed use, an increased range of rotation, and a jaw coating designed to minimize tissue sticking.

Expanding the Surgical Portfolio

“We are pleased to receive 510(k) clearance for the Powerseal Open Extended Jaw for open surgery, further expanding our advanced bipolar surgical energy portfolio,” says Glenn Thurlow, vice president and regional business unit lead for surgical devices at Olympus Corp of the Americas, in a release. “The Powerseal devices are designed to address physician needs for strong vessel sealing, procedural efficiency, and comfort in the operating room, supporting our ongoing commitment to advancing surgical performance and patient care.”

Full market availability for the new Powerseal Open Extended Jaw device is expected in late spring 2026. The bipolar electrosurgical instrument is indicated for procedures where ligation and division of vessels, tissue bundles, and lymphatics is desired.
