The software supports CT and MR image visualization across standard displays, glasses-free 3D systems, and virtual reality environments.

Avatar Medical announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for Avatar Medical Vision, a software platform for 3D medical image processing, review, and surgical planning, according to a company release.

The software enables clinicians to process and interact with CT and MR imaging data as spatial, multi-dimensional representations across standard displays, glasses-free 3D systems, and virtual reality environments, the company says. Avatar Medical states that the platform is designed for use in specialties such as neurosurgery, ENT, orthopedics, oncology, and interventional radiology.

The platform integrates with existing imaging workflows, including PACS, and supports analysis, annotation, and manipulation of imaging data in 2D, 3D, and immersive formats.

Avatar Medical says the system is compatible with glasses-free 3D display technology and has been developed in collaboration with Barco. The company states that the use of FDA-cleared display systems is intended to support reliability in clinical environments.

The company also says the platform allows clinicians to share visualizations with patients during consultations to support understanding of anatomy and treatment planning.

“For too long, physicians have been making three-dimensional decisions from two-dimensional images,” says Xavier Wartelle, chief executive officer of Avatar Medical, in the release. “At Avatar Medical, we’ve made deliberate technology choices to change that, prioritizing glasses-free, shared visualization so physicians and patients can look at anatomy together.”

According to the company, the clearance includes compatibility with the Barco Eonis 3D glasses-free display as part of a joint solution referred to as Eonis Vision.
