The initiative seeks artificial intelligence and data solutions to improve patient safety, wellness visits, and digital quality measurement.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), through the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality, is sponsoring QualTech, a new industry event to identify technology solutions that address healthcare quality priorities.
The program invites US-based teams, academic institutions, and private sector entities to submit white papers for technology solutions aligned with four specific opportunity areas. Following a review of submissions, up to eight finalists will be selected to present their solutions at the agency’s headquarters in Baltimore on Nov 9, 2026.
Artificial Intelligence for Patient Safety and Wellness
One primary focus area involves using artificial intelligence to identify patient safety risks by reviewing medical records. Currently, oversight of certified providers relies on manual reviews of thousands of pages of records during periodic surveys. The agency seeks artificial intelligence-assisted tools that can automatically surface documentation gaps and flag areas for clinical review, allowing surveyors to focus on expert judgment and patient interviews.
The organization is also looking for clinical artificial intelligence to increase the reach of annual wellness visits. Fewer than 50% of Medicare beneficiaries currently receive these visits, which are used to screen for health risks and develop prevention plans, according to CMS. Proposed solutions should streamline health risk assessments and care planning by abstracting data from electronic health records, claims, and laboratory results.
Digital Quality Measurement and Data Dashboards
The agency is also seeking a next-generation calculator for digital quality measures. This tool would support approximately 70 digital measures converted from electronic clinical quality measures, providing a standardized framework for providers and facilities. A high-performance computing platform is considered essential to connect directly to electronic health records and process structured data in real time.
The fourth priority is the development of a National Quality Hospital Dashboard. This interactive platform would aggregate publicly available hospital data from the Department of Health and Human Services and CMS to allow comparisons across regions and populations. The goal is to turn complex quality data into accessible insights for beneficiaries, caregivers, and providers.
Finalists selected for the November event will present their solutions to agency leadership and subject matter experts. Following the presentations, the CMS may pursue further engagement, including future demonstrations, pilots, or a potential role in the 2027 Quality Conference.
Submissions close on Sept 4, 2026. The submission must be uploaded to the QualTech submission link in PDF format. The primary point of contact identified in each selected submission will be notified via email by Oct 13, 2026. Teams and organizations with selected submissions must confirm participation in the QualTech event by Oct 19, 2026.
