Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) has announced the release of its inaugural cybersecurity annual report. Through the BD 2020 Cybersecurity Report, the company seeks to address cybersecurity challenges specific to healthcare and offer guidance about cybersecurity practices for working with medical device manufacturers.

“New security threats emerge daily across the healthcare industry,” says Rob Suárez, chief information security officer of BD. “That’s why we believe transparency and collaboration are essential. It’s about protecting what matters most—patient safety and patient privacy—while maintaining a resilient and thriving healthcare system.”

Specifically, the report discusses:

  • The current state of healthcare cybersecurity: From sophisticated phishing attacks to coordinated efforts to disrupt the healthcare supply chain and clinical workflows at hospitals, cyberattacks concurrent with the COVID-19 pandemic have the industry on heightened alert.
  • Cybersecurity maturity: The report highlights multiple collaborations aimed at improving cybersecurity across the industry, as well best practices for healthcare providers to implement when working with medical device manufacturers.
  • Future trends in healthcare cybersecurity: Ongoing challenges related to remote work, additional privacy legislation. and greater transparency in the name of patient safety are among the cybersecurity trends healthcare providers and patients can expect in the year ahead.

The company also launched the BD Cybersecurity Trust Center, a website where customers can access product security documentation, including bulletins, patches, and certifications.
