GE Healthcare is collaborating with CenTrak Inc, Newton, PA for the Asset Optimization system, a new RFID technology that divides a room or segments a bay with radio frequency identification (RFID) virtual walls.

Assets—such as patients and life-saving equipment—can be pinpointed in a monitored area 6 feet by 8 feet whether curtained off or open, which is the size of a typical, small patient bay. The battery powered system needs no additional wiring.

The sub-room-level distinction in areas of the hospital enhances RFID room-level accuracy, allowing health care providers to create virtual RFID rooms where higher level intelligence, tracking, and reporting are more valuable, such as the OR and ED.

GE specializes in medical imaging and information technologies, medical diagnostics, patient monitoring systems, performance improvement, drug discovery, and biopharmaceutical manufacturing technologies. CenTrak develops and markets real-time active-RFID network products for tracking people and assets.
