The agency recommendations emphasize using manufacturer-authorized accessories and avoiding overnight charging to reduce fire and injury risks.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released safety tips to help users charge medical devices safely and minimize the risk of overheating. The guidelines address common rechargeable devices, including hearing aids, glucose monitors, and insulin pumps.

The agency advises users to follow manufacturer directions for device care and to use only the charging accessories provided with the device, such as cables, chargers, and adaptors. According to the FDA, third-party accessories may allow for higher power levels than the battery can safely handle, increasing the risk of sparks, fires, or serious burns.

The guidelines also recommend inspecting devices and accessories for signs of physical damage, such as melting or warping where the charger connects to the device. If damage is identified, users should stop charging the device immediately and contact the manufacturer for replacement parts.

The FDA suggests charging devices in visible areas away from flammable materials and avoiding soft surfaces like couches, pillows, or curtains, which can trap heat and cause a device to overheat more easily. Additionally, connectivity ports and accessories must be kept dry to prevent electrical issues, and users should inspect cables for the presence of liquids before connecting them to a power outlet.

To ensure early detection of potential issues, the FDA recommends charging devices during the day while users are awake rather than overnight. The agency also advises unplugging chargers as soon as a device is fully charged and protecting equipment from extreme temperatures, such as direct sunlight or storage in vehicles during especially hot or cold days.

These safety tips are intended to highlight and supplement existing information provided in manufacturer instructions for the use and maintenance of medical devices, according to the FDA.
