The acquisition includes exclusive rights to the FDA-cleared xvision Spine System, which uses augmented reality for surgical navigation.

VB Spine has completed its acquisition of exclusive rights to the xvision Spine System from Augmedics. The transaction allows VB Spine to immediately begin transitioning the augmented reality platform into its operations.

The xvision Spine System, cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration, is intended to assist in precisely locating anatomical structures during open, minimally invasive, or percutaneous spine procedures. According to Augmedics, the system has been used in nearly 13,000 spinal procedures to date.

“We are thrilled at how quickly this transaction completed. It is a testament to how critical the xvision Spine System platform is to the future of spine care and demonstrates our desire to realize the potential of augmented reality,” says Marc Viscogliosi, co-CEO of VB Spine, in a release.

The system allows surgeons to visualize a patient’s anatomy and navigate instruments and implants during procedures. VB Spine and Augmedics are currently working together to ensure a seamless transition of the business, according to a release from VB Spine.

“We are moving to operationalize the business and are grateful for this opportunity,” says Viscogliosi in a release.

The platform enables surgeons to visualize anatomy as if they have “X-ray vision,” allowing for the navigation of instruments. Augmedics indicated it remains focused on advancing augmented reality navigation into adjacent medical specialties.
