The new system, featuring the Telemetry Monitor 5500, is designed to streamline alarm management and provide data-driven operational insights for cardiac monitoring.
Philips has introduced a new telemetry platform intended to help healthcare facilities manage challenges related to staff shortages and alarm management. A key component of the system is the next-generation Telemetry Monitor 5500, which offers a data-driven approach to patient care and operational performance in cardiac monitoring.
According to the company, the platform was developed to address issues like telemetry overuse, which can burden clinical teams, and alarm fatigue. Citing industry data, Philips notes that care teams can face an average of 350 alarms per patient per day, leading to cognitive overload. The new system is designed to streamline alarm management, deliver data-based insights, and automate certain clinical tasks.
“We continue to hear how disruptive non-actionable alarms and repetitive tasks can be. This platform will be a game-changer, offering a unified solution built to optimize telemetry across the care continuum,” says Ajay Parkhe, business leader, Hospital Patient Monitoring at Philips, in a release. “The combination of advanced clinical decision support tools, data-driven analytics, and secure monitoring empowers health systems to deliver better care while improving efficiency and reducing alarm burden.”
System Integration and Post-Discharge Monitoring
The telemetry platform integrates with the Philips central monitoring unit (CMU) solution to support enterprise-wide connectivity for mobile cardiac patients.
In addition to in-hospital use, the company also offers Philips Mobile Cardiac Telemetry (MCOT) technology, which allows clinicians to monitor cardiac patients for up to 30 days after discharge. According to Philips, MCOT can be used to monitor a patient following an inpatient stay or an emergency department evaluation to help transition them into an appropriate care pathway.
