In late May 2013, an earthMed medical volunteer team will travel to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to train Mongolian medical staff and conduct evaluations for improving health care.
The medical team, with expertise that includes cardiothoracic surgery, cardiothoracic anesthesia, physical therapy/rehabilitative medicine, as well as other earthMed personnel will provide anesthesia training, lung biopsy and resection surgery training, and operating room nursing training at the Tuberculosis Hospital of the National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD), and cardiac mechanical valve replacements and valve annuloplasty at the Shastin Hospital.
The earthMed team is supported by the US Embassy in Ulaanbaatar and the director of research, training, and international relations of the NCCD, the vice-minister of health for Mongolia, and the president of the Mongolian National Association of Surgeons.
The earthMed medical team pays their own expenses and typically volunteers their vacation time and donates their services to provide their medical expertise over the one-week mission.
Those interested in joining the May 2013 team can contact earthMed Director Lou Schonder via e-mail.
