A recent report from ECRI Institute, Linear Accelerators, features user survey results on top linear accelerator–based radiosurgery systems (linacs). The results show that among ECRI Institute members, four vendors dominate the linac market: Accuray, Brainlab, Elekta, and Varian. The average quoted price for these systems runs between $3.2 million and $4.8 million.

Survey respondents were contacted via ECRI’s SELECTplus User Experience Network. They rated linear accelerator models on a variety of criteria, including imaging capabilities, device interoperability, patient setup time, treatment speed, and physics/calibration tools. The report groups the survey results by vendor and model to show how each vendor’s product line fares in each category.

Key survey findings included the following insights:

  • The linac models with the highest overall ratings scored the highest for ease of use, functionality, imaging capabilities, and device interoperability.
  • Nearly half of all surveyed members typically utilize their linac for both standard radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.
  • Of those surveyed, 59% use a treatment planning system and linear accelerator from the same manufacturer, and 47% use an oncology information system that is also sold by the linac manufacturer.
