The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) has announced that President and CEO Mary Logan plans to retire at the end of 2016. Logan is only the second president to lead the association over its 48-year history. Her 8-year tenure has coincided with a period of significant growth for the association, as well as rapid transition for the healthcare technology management (HTM) field as a whole.

Logan announced the decision at a recent meeting of AAMI’s board of directors, saying that she wanted to spend more time with her family. Her transition, coming in the middle of a 3-year strategic plan for the organization, will allow a new leader to step in with a clear vision for the association already in place, she said.

“This was a difficult decision because I love AAMI and all that it represents. But it’s the right decision,” Logan said in an announcement. “I think I’ve been the right president for AAMI during a pivotal period in its history. Looking ahead, AAMI will need a fresh perspective so that it can continue to grow and fulfill its mission in setting the standards—literally and figuratively—for healthcare technology and advancing the cause of patient safety.”

Prior to her appointment at AAMI, Logan was a lawyer and established association executive. According to the organization, under her leadership AAMI has improved its financial health and relevance, leading a number of summits with the US Food and Drug Administration, expanding educational and professional resources for members, overhauling the annual conference, and improving patient safety through aggressive efforts of the AAMI Foundation.

A search committee will be formed and a search firm selected in the first quarter of 2016 to hire Logan’s replacement. She says she plans to maintain an active role in the organization until her retirement.
