Police say the 61-year-old was pulled into the machine during a scan at a New York imaging center.
A 61-year-old man is in critical condition after entering an active magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) room while wearing a large metallic chain, according to the Nassau County Police Department in Long Island, New York.
The incident occurred around 4:34 pm on Wednesday, July 16, at Nassau Open MRI on Old Country Road in Westbury, New York. Police said the man entered the unauthorized area while a, MRI scan was in progress. The powerful magnet pulled the chain—and the man—toward the machine, resulting in a medical emergency.
Officers responding to a 911 call found the man at the scene and assisted in his care. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
It is unclear how the man entered the MRI room during an active scan. The incident remains under investigation, police said.
