The imPulse handheld ECG monitor uses EPIC sensors from Plessey, UK, to detect the ECG of the user. The device relays the information as a trace, which can be displayed on a Smartphone or tablet via a Bluetooth link.

The user touches the contact pads with both thumbs. The EPIC sensors detect the changes in the electric potential and send the raw data to a laptop or smartphone, where Plessey’s software turns this into a clear trace for display. Designed for the home health and remote monitoring markets, the imPulse allows routine, quick, and accurate recording of ECG signals outside of the medical environment and without the need for conductive gel.

The EPIC sensor requires no physical or resistive contact to make measurements. The tiny, solid-state sensor can be integrated on a chip with other features such as data converters, digital signal processing, and wireless communications capability.
