Axel Wirth

Axel Wirth, CPHIMS, CISSP, HCISPP, has been named the recipient of the 2018 ACCE/HIMSS Excellence in Clinical Engineering and Information Technology Synergies Award, a joint award sponsored by the American College of Clinical Engineering (ACCE) and HIMSS. This award recognizes individuals who have best demonstrated leadership in promoting or implementing significant synergies between the clinical engineering and information technology professions.

Wirth, a distinguished healthcare architect with Symantec Corp., has authored numerous articles and has frequently presented at ACCE, AAMI, HIMSS, FDA, and National Institute of Standards and Technology webinars and national conferences. He has also been a leader in several national organizations, serving on the AAMI’s BI&T editorial board, as well as a member of the HIMSS Privacy and Security Committee.

Nominees for the award are honored for professional or technical contributions to the professions, such as research, development of a new process or product, a paper of significance, and trailblazing work in a new application of clinical engineering and IT.

“Axel is a recognized expert and advocate on health IT compliance, privacy and security,” says ACCE President Arif Subhan, MS, CCE, CHTM, FACCE. “He has been very active in ACCE, HIMSS, AAMI, and other industry organizations. He is a frequent and influential speaker at various industry forums on subjects involving cybersecurity, medical device security, and other related topics. Axel is unquestionably a worthy recipient of this award.”

Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, FAAN, vice president, informatics, HIMSS North America, also spoke out about the award, commenting: “Axel Wirth is a well-respected member of the HIMSS community and lends valuable expert insights on cybersecurity. His enthusiasm to share that knowledge with others has paved his way as an industry thought leader whose presence is integral to HIMSS and other organizations. He is highly regarded by his professional colleagues as a subject matter expert and leader in clinical engineering and information technology.”

Wirth will be honored at the HIMSS18 Awards Gala on Thursday, March 8, in Las Vegas.
