A surgeon remotely performed a cardiac procedure on a patient in India during a live demonstration in Barcelona, highlighting advances in robotic telesurgery.
SS Innovations International demonstrated the telesurgery capabilities of its SSi Mantra surgical robotic system and SSi MantrAsana tele-surgeon console during live procedures at two international conferences in October 2026.
At the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting in Barcelona, Spain, SS Innovations chairman and CEO Sudhir Srivastava, MD, performed a robotic-assisted cardiac telesurgery live on stage from a location roughly 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers) from the patient, who was treated at Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Bengaluru, India. The remote procedure, a robotic atrial septal defect repair, was supported patient-side by Lalit Malik, MD, chief cardiac surgeon of Manipal Hospital Jaipur.
The meeting is described as the largest global gathering of the cardiothoracic surgical community, drawing thousands of clinicians and industry professionals each year.
Four Telesurgeries at Inaugural SRS India Conference
At the inaugural Society of Robotic Surgery India Conference in New Delhi, four surgeons completed four separate robotic-assisted telesurgeries using the SSi Mantra and SSi MantrAsana platforms in live demonstrations. The remote procedures performed or broadcast live included a right partial nephrectomy, a right hemicolectomy, a left-sided pyeloplasty on a pediatric patient, and a modified radical hysterectomy with a sentinel lymph node biopsy.
The conference was organized by the Society of Robotic Surgery and officially inaugurated by Jitendra Singh, MD, India’s Minister of Science and Technology.
