The medical-grade ice-based container replaces traditional cardboard and Styrofoam packaging to improve safety and reliability during organ shipping.

The National Kidney Registry announced the nationwide rollout of StrongBox, a medical-grade ice-based container designed for the safe transportation of kidneys. Following a pilot program with 20 high-volume member centers, the platform is now implemented across more than 100 National Kidney Registry member centers.

While paired kidney exchange has advanced since the first commercial airline transport of a living donor kidney in 2008, organ packaging has remained largely unchanged for decades, according to a release from the National Kidney Registry. The StrongBox aims to enhance protection by eliminating risks associated with legacy cardboard and Styrofoam packaging, such as damaged containers, improperly sealed boxes, and leaking containers rejected by airlines.

“The StrongBox is a game-changer for the safety and reliability of living donor kidney transport,” says Amanda Leonberg-Yoo, MD, nephrologist and medical director of the Living Kidney Donor Program at the Penn Transplant Institute, in a release. “It ensures that kidneys arrive protected and uncompromised, giving patients the best possible chance for a successful transplant.”The

The National Kidney Registry also launched a reusability initiative last month. Under this program, StrongBox units are collected at member centers, sanitized, and prepared for reuse in subsequent shipments.

“From transport logistics to usability, StrongBox makes important improvements to the transplant process,” says Karen Miller, RN, lead kidney transplant coordinator at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, in a release. “It brings a new level of confidence and consistency to moving living donor kidneys.”

“Living kidney transplants provide the best outcomes for patients, and StrongBox is purpose-built to protect these precious organs on their journey from living donors to waiting patients,” says Garet Hil, CEO of the National Kidney Registry, in a release. “The StrongBox is not an incremental improvement; it’s a revolutionary new approach to ice-based organ transport that combines durability and precision to mitigate risk in transporting kidneys.”
