The line between devices used in the home and the obligation of hospitals has been gaining attention lately as more and more patients find themselves on their own turf still hooked up to medical equipment. Somewhat related to this is a question from a clinical engineering supervisor who is looking for some help from his colleagues in the field. Here’s what he said:

“Our hospitals insurance provider is trying to get us to check patients’ personal insulin pumps before they can use them in the hospital. I cannot find anything out there where anyone does this. Can you give me any direction and advice?”

Have any of you come up against this or a similar situation? Can you offer any suggestions or provide any direction? We’ll look forward to your ideas.
