Clarius Mobile Health has launched a wireless, handheld ultrasound scanner with a mobile application that’s compatible with most iOS and Android smartphones. Offering automated adjustments, the Clarius ultrasound scanner is designed for quick exams, as well as guiding procedures such as nerve blocks and targeted injections.

“Physicians have been asking for a portable ultrasound system that works with their iPhone for some time,” says Clarius Mobile Health CEO Laurent Pelissier. “I’m happy to say we’ve succeeded in creating a product that will enable more clinicians to use ultrasound anywhere to improve patient care.” Operating the device is as easy as using a mobile phone camera, Pelissier adds.

Although many healthcare facilities utilize compact ultrasound systems, their high cost—some sell for as much as $70,000—has been a barrier to more widespread adoption, Clarius officials say. Pending regulatory clearance from the FDA, the European Economic Area, and Health Canada, Clarius Mobile Health will offer several mobile scanners for the price of a traditional compact system, company personnel reveal.

The company is exhibiting its new ultrasound scanner at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine conference.
