This year, healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals as well as innovators, regulators, and industry thought leaders will converge in Long Beach, Calif., for the 2023 AAMI eXchange, taking place from June 16-19.

“This June will bring together the entire HTM field for what is sure to be another empowering, rejuvenating, and inspiring AAMI eXchange,” says Pamela Arora, president and CEO of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). “We look forward to seeing everyone together in-person as we share our knowledge, learn new approaches to today’s challenges, and unite together to move the health technology industry forward.”

Education Sessions

For those looking to improve their skills, AAMI eXchange will offer more than 80 education sessions led by recognized experts in the field. Those who hold an ACI certification can also earn up to 15 ACI CEUs by attending sessions, which will be held across three days.

A wide range of tracks makes it easier to find the content most interesting and relevant to each person, and then select different courses among them. There are nine tracks to choose from:

  1. Artificial Intelligence & the Internet of Things
  2. Career/Professional Development
  3. Cybersecurity
  4. Equipment Management
  5. Telehealth/Hospital-at-Home
  6. Meeting Regulatory/Accreditation Requirements
  7. Patient Safety
  8. Sterilization (medical device packaging & reprocessing)
  9. Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality

A full listing of all educational sessions can be found at aami.org.

BMET Technical Training

A new addition to this year’s AAMI eXchange is a collection of hands-on technical training courses for BMETS that occur concurrently with the eXchange conference.

“We have often gotten feedback that the AAMI eXchange programming is more geared for HTM managers and clinical engineers and less for boots-on-the-ground technicians,” explains AAMI’s Danielle McGeary, vice president of HTM. “So, for the first time, the AAMI eXchange will offer technical training specifically geared toward biomedical equipment technicians, students, and anyone in your organizations who does technical work.”

These Saturday and Sunday classes also come with a complimentary expo pass so course attendees can explore the vendor floor the day they are there. Trainees do not need full conference registration to take any of these courses. Those interested may register for one or multiple training courses throughout the weekend, with classes ranging from $30 to $75, depending on their length.

Each training course will cover one of seven key topics:

  1. Virtual-reality-enabled training for portable X-ray devices
  2. Metrology
  3. Defibrillators
  4. X-ray tube handling
  5. Diagnostic ultrasound
  6. Picture archiving and communication systems, or PACS
  7. Contrast injectors

Onsite Career Center

An onsite AAMI career center will also be available to help interested attendees advance their careers. It will feature opportunities to meet face-to-face with potential employers, interview for a new job, view the most up-to-date job openings, and receive career guidance. All attendees can also visit the career center to have a professional headshot photo taken for use in job applications, on LinkedIn and other social media, and for other networking opportunities. Attendees will receive a digital copy after the event.

Expo Experiences

Approximately 160 exhibitors will be on hand this year to showcase their latest and greatest offerings and network with attendees in the conference’s expo hall. What’s more, this year’s expo will feature product and service spotlights in the AAMI Theater as well as product showcase spaces on the hall floor, plus exhibitor in-booth theaters.

Attendees will also have opportunities to take advantage of special events in the expo hall, including hands-on training experiences in the AR/VR theater and Saturday morning symposiums: one for clinical engineering and another for healthcare technology. Separate registration for both symposiums is available on aami.org’s eXchange 2023 event page.

Keynote Addresses

Each day of the AAMI eXchange will also feature a keynote address, including an interactive Q&A. On Saturday, Alex Weber, an American Ninja Warrior and motivational speaker, will provide strategies for how to reach your peak potential to achieve breakthrough success in his keynote titled “Unstoppable.”

Moreover, on Sunday, Scott Trevino, TRIMEDX’s senior vice president of cybersecurity, will present “New Legislation and Regulations Are Evolving HTM. Are You Prepared?” The session will dissect the cybersecurity landscape through a legislative and regulatory lens and examine the best practices needed to ensure HTM programs remain compliant and safe.

Finally, on Monday, June 19, the Joint Commission’s Herman A. McKenzie, MBA, CHSP, will be on hand for an interactive keynote presentation. As director of the Department of Engineering in the Standards Interpretation Group, he leads the team responsible for developing and interpreting the Life Safety and Environment of Care Standards. Because of such high interest in McKenzie sharing his insight and expertise, everyone is encouraged to submit their questions ahead of time by filling out a form available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ASKHERMAN2023.

Extracurricular Events

In addition to networking opportunities in between sessions in the expo hall, AAMI eXchange attendees will also be able to spend time together during several special events outside of the convention center.

Those arriving early can opt to take part in the First Annual AAMI eXchange Golf Tournament on the morning of Friday, June 16, for a friendly competition. This tournament is open to all ability levels with multiple prizes for top scorers, plus a special prize for the first to card a hole in one.

AAMI will be hosting a conference-wide party on Saturday, June 17. This event will take place at The Cove outside the Long Beach Convention Center for an under the sea-themed evening where conference registrants will be able to enjoy music, games, food, and drinks. Finally, for the grand finale, AAMI will take over Café Sevilla—a Spanish-inspired restaurant that is a short stroll from the convention—on Sunday evening. See you in Long Beach!
