The acquisitions of Q Surgical and Proficient Surgical extend the company’s surgical microscope sales and service coverage across the western and northeastern US.
Western Microsurgical, a portfolio company of HealthEdge Investment Partners, has acquired Q Surgical and Proficient Surgical, expanding the Denver-based company’s reach as an independent service organization and provider of surgical microscopes, operating room products, and supplies to hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.
Q Surgical, founded in 2009, serves hospitals and ASCs in Northern California and Nevada, while Proficient Surgical, founded in 1996, serves the Northeast. Both companies bring established relationships with surgical teams and manufacturers, along with expertise in surgical microscopy and complementary operating room products.
Western Microsurgical also expanded its territory through the transfer of the Leica Microsystems sales and service contract previously held by Shawnee Medical in two states. With these additions, the combined company provides surgical microscope sales and service across 18 states in the western and northeastern United States.
“Q Surgical and Proficient Surgical have built strong reputations through deep product knowledge, longstanding relationships, and responsive service,” says Brian Bedrick, founder and CEO of Western Microsurgical, in a release. “We are excited to partner with their owners and teams to build on those strengths. Together, we can deliver broader equipment and service capabilities to hospitals and [ambulatory surgery centers] while preserving the personal attention and local expertise they value.”
Owners Retain Stake in Combined Company
The owners of Q Surgical and Proficient Surgical have retained meaningful ownership in the combined company and remain actively involved in its operations, a structure WMS says will help preserve longstanding customer relationships while supporting the next phase of growth.
“Partnering with [Western Microsurgical] is an exciting next step for Q Surgical. We share a commitment to supporting surgeons and operating room teams with the right equipment and dependable service. We look forward to remaining involved as owners and helping build the combined company,” says Will Aarsheim, co-founder of Q Surgical, in a release,
Steven Baum, founder of Proficient Surgical, echoed that sentiment. “This partnership brings together complementary teams with a shared focus on quality and service,” he says in a release. “Remaining invested in the combined company allows us to help shape its future while continuing to support the hospitals and surgical teams we have served for many years.”
Building a National Surgical Microscopy Platform
The acquisitions advance Western Microsurgical’s strategy of building a national surgical microscopy platform through partnerships with experienced operators. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Western Microsurgical operates as an independent manufacturer’s representative and independent service organization for Leica Microsystems, supporting surgical microscopy used in spine, neurological, and ophthalmic procedures at hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and specialty clinics. The company also distributes surgical instruments, operating room products, and supplies from other manufacturers.
