The contractor is accused of taking more than $60,000 in equipment and supplies from a University of Iowa hospital construction site and trying to sell them online.

A contractor working at the construction site of a new University of Iowa hospital in North Liberty has been accused of stealing more than $60,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment, as well as construction equipment, and attempting to resell it online, according to WHO 13 Des Moines.

Between January and May 2025, 56-year-old Kevin Lane Grimm allegedly took advantage of his access as a contractor to remove items from the facility under construction, including several class II medical devices restricted by the US Food and Drug Administration to licensed clinical use. Among the stolen items were a digital hand-held dynamometer, an AccuVein vein viewer, a Philips MR 5000 patient monitoring portal, and a Phillips interview remote patient monitoring device, according to court documents cited by WHO 13.

Police say Grimm listed some of the stolen items as “new” on platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace. He was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Johnson County Jail. Grimm faces charges of first-degree theft, ongoing criminal conduct, and multiple prescription drug law violations.

A request for comment from University of Iowa Health Care had not been returned at the time of publication.
