Managed from an Apple iPad, the system is designed to maintain visitor check-in, logging, and badge printing functions even during internet or power outages.

Athena Security has launched a new hospital Visitor Management System (VMS) on the Apple iPad, designed to operate continuously even during network disruptions. The system’s key feature is its offline capability, which allows hospitals to manage visitor access, print badges, and log entries and exits without an active internet connection, ensuring operational continuity during server downtime, power outages, or natural disasters.

According to the company, the VMS functions with or without internet by processing and storing data locally on the iPad. Once connectivity is restored, the system automatically syncs the data.

“Hospitals can’t afford downtime,” says Lisa Falzone, president and co-founder of Athena Security, in a release. “Our new VMS is designed on the Apple iPad to be always up and running…We stay up even during natural disasters, internet outages, or cyberattacks. In a world where seconds matter, we’ve made resilience the default.”

System Features Focus on Security and Customization

Beyond its offline mode, the VMS includes several features aimed at healthcare environments. The system incorporates the company’s H-Shield platform for encrypted data handling to protect patient health information and personally identifiable information (PII). It also provides real-time screening against nationwide predator and perpetrator lists, a function that remains active even when the system is offline.

For operational flexibility, user workflows can be customized for different visitor types, such as contractors, family members, vendors, or VIPs, allowing facilities to align check-in protocols with specific departmental or compliance requirements. The VMS can also be integrated with Athena’s AI-powered Weapon Detection System to create a unified platform for managing both visitor access and physical threats.

“Whether it’s preventing unauthorized access, enabling faster emergency response, or ensuring compliance with visitor protocols, our new hospital visitor management system is setting a new standard for healthcare security,” says Chris Ciabarra, co-founder and CTO of Athena Security, in a release.
