New initiative aims to create global standards for transparent, interoperable, and safe AI in clinical and operational settings.

Health Level Seven International (HL7), an organization focused on healthcare data interoperability, has launched a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Office aimed at developing global standards to support the safe and effective use of AI technologies in healthcare.

The initiative will focus on creating technical frameworks that promote transparency, interoperability, and scalability of AI across clinical, operational, and research environments. The new office will also serve as a hub for collaboration among industry, government, and academic stakeholders working to align AI efforts with healthcare needs.

To lead the office, HL7 has named Daniel Vreeman, DPT, as its first chief AI officer. Vreeman, who also serves as the organization’s chief standards development officer, will oversee HL7’s broader AI strategy. That includes the ongoing HL7 AI Challenge, efforts to develop anti-fraud tools, and partnerships with regulatory agencies and technology developers.

“Through this new office, we’ll ensure that HL7’s open standards become the essential building blocks for tomorrow’s AI innovations—enabling breakthrough technologies that are transparent, interoperable, and seamlessly integrated into health-related decision-making,” says Vreeman in a release.

The AI Office will focus on four key areas:

  1. Standards — Building the AI-ready interoperability stack for safe, explainable AI with provenance capabilities that advance human health
  2. Global Leadership & Partnerships — Convening the worldwide AI+health community to align standards, shape policy, and accelerate responsible innovation
  3. AI Innovation Lab — Incubating AI solutions to enhance member experiences, accelerate standards development, and pioneer new ways of working
  4. Community Excellence — Empowering implementers with tools and best practices for responsible, standards-powered AI deployment

“Artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape healthcare delivery, evaluation, and payment,” says Charles Jaffe, MD, PhD, CEO of HL7 International, in a release. “Our new AI Office positions HL7 as the trusted global convener for responsible, standards-driven AI innovation—ensuring these transformative technologies deliver on their promise to improve health for all.”

Initial projects from the AI Office include work on frameworks for explainability and transparency, initiatives to address healthcare fraud through AI, and the creation of implementation guides for deploying AI in clinical environments.

A public webinar introducing the new AI Office is scheduled for Thursday, July 24, at 1 pm ET. Registration is available here.
