Dialysis is used by patients who have lost the ability to filter waste salts and fluids from the blood because their kidneys are no longer functioning properly. There are two forms of this treatment which may be asked about on the CBET exam: peritoneal dialysis, often performed in the ambulatory setting, and hemodialysis, the more common type, usually performed in an outpatient clinic.
